NHS CPC at HSJ Awards 2011
NHS CPC has been named as a finalist in the Procurement Initiative of the Year category at the HSJ Awards 2011.
The nomination is for the Clinical Waste Services (Bulk and Non-Bulk) contract which was established by NHS CPC and NHS Yorkshire Clinical Waste Consortium.
In recent years waste regulations have changed, with stricter requirements on permissible emissions from incinerators. There has also been a requirement to increase segregation of the various categories of clinical waste. Alongside these changes to the regulations, alternative and cheaper disposal technologies are now available
The contract aimed to ensure that these areas were fully addressed as part of a new contracting arrangement, with the added environmental and cost benefits this would produce.
Steve Sercombe, Senior Category Manager of Corporate Services, is very pleased with the recognition: “The Clinical Waste Services contract has delivered significant cost savings to our member Trusts, as well as the environmental benefits in improving the way they dispose of clinical waste. For the contract to be recognized in the HSJ Awards is testament to the hard work of all parties concerned, and is a real achievement.”
Benefits of the contract
A significant result of the new contract is the financial benefit which the Trusts now enjoy. There is a total annual saving of £1.7m per annum which is cash released to provide for other patient care services across the region.
The majority of waste is now treated through alternative treatment methods, with reliance on incineration and landfill much reduced. This outcome has significantly reduced the carbon emissions that were produced previously.
Recycling opportunities are now being actively pursued, which should reduce further the amounts going to landfill, and provide a cash benefit from income derived through the recycling of plastics and steel.
The provider has established a new alternative treatment facility in a central location in the region, further improving the transportation logistics and reducing the carbon footprint for the Trusts utilising the new contract. This has secured jobs within the region both directly and at associated businesses which now provide day-to-day support services to the new providers’ facility.
